December 15…

First, I want to thank “??????” for the comment. Thank you.
Thanks to DJ too.
I’ve started to write real posts lately, but never finished them. I will continue with one of the drafts and post it shortly. I guess the news is this:After nearly two months of wading in retail bureaucracy, I got a new laptop. My old one was a lemon. HP finally owned up to this critical hardware issue, where symptoms include:
· The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager.
| NOTE: | If the notebook PC starts normally please verify that your system BIOS is version F.3a or greater before contacting support for this issue. For instructions on determining the current version of the BIOS installed and how to obtain the latest version see the “Update the BIOS to version F.3a or later” section of this document. |
· The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.
· The notebook does not start.
· The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery is installed and the AC adapter is connected.
· The notebook issues a single beep during boot indicating no power.
· There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.
· The external monitor functions, but there is no image on the notebook LCD panel.
Having a computer that doesn’t even start seriously decreases one’s productivity. Also, the blank unlit screen, random full-volume beeps, and strange whinning noises are particularly annoying. So, after having my laptop in and out of service at Best Buy for the last eight weeks only to get it home long enough for it to stop working, I finally set about ‘convincing’ Best Buy that I was owed a new laptop. The task was kind of fun. The service agents, “Geek Squad”, and floor managers aren’t my friends, so ‘working’ with them in this way was… …well, maybe you can guess what I mean. In the end, I was handed a brand new HP Pavillion dv6675us.
This thing seems pretty good. It is running Vista Ultimate (64 bit), which has some pretty cool features. Many of which are really just visual, but there are some more functional features as well. I think the key problems are software, driver, and peripheral incompatibilities. I couldn’t get my old webcam to work no matter what I tried, but aside from that, everything seems to be running smoothly. In the end, I now have a fully working computer, with some pretty substantial upgrades! I especially like this fingerprint reader do-dad that has software that pops up whenever you have a password to key in. It kind of feels like I am in the Mission Impossible series, though I did not like the movies. I am also using Office 2007.
Anyway, the no laptop issue is of course only part of the reason for no posts. Thanks to Andrew for the little kick in the ass to post again. I was beginning to think “nobody cares” as ?????? suggested. Who are you anyway? I am already quite sure, but if you could confirm, that would be way cooler than your legendary anonymous post. No pressure, just thought maybe you like to take credit for your work. I won’t put any more effort into this post here and now, I will instead get back to an earlier draft of a post I started a while back that somehow turned itself into an email to Danny Finster.
Big ups to the boys in Argie, and to anyone still with me.
-A dot ca.
PS: I owe a few people a few phone calls. WW/BG, your’s is atop the list.
