Sursee Report…

Posted on June 26, 2007

Sursee Post…  [Not the report]

Another WIC race.  “Just another day at the office.”…well let’s not go that far.
Sursee was stupid.  Massi hit me.  So did Yann.  So did everybody.  Even Ben Alchin.  He’s the worst, and as far as I’m concerned, he owes me a pretty big favour. Take that, internet.

With the busiest part of the WIC season is upon me here in Switzerland, I seem to have an impending potential backlog of reports to write.  I must say that at this point, I feel like it is something of a responsibility to have these done, and online, and to write them.  I do want to communicate my feelings, emotions, perspective, experience(s), and of course the skating stuff to my family and friends.  This serves as my primary communication to all the people I love back home. I don’t send mass emails telling people my latest news and gossip.  I don’t send postcards, and I rarely make phone calls.  This mode, I believe, leaves a lot to the reader to assess what is really going on with me.  I think that there is more in this website than simply the words I type and broadcast.  The time between posts, my ‘text’ mood, the direction, and focus of each post speaks more than the content of the posts themselves, though much of what is communicated through these more subtle differences from post to post are communicated inadvertently, and usually (for the most part) unintentionally.

With that said, I want you all to know that at the same time this website, and my writing is for me.  I am documenting my own travels, and assembling the closest thing to a scrapbook as I ever have.  I like that.  I also find the writing therapeutic.  Not just the putting of words together, and the quiet time that it serves me, but more importantly, it gives me the time [and ‘forces’ me] to go over the memories that jump out at me over a race or a training ride, or training on the track, or walking through the streets and understand and rationalize them a little deeper.

There is something of a ‘symbiotic relationship’ going on here.  (haha)…  I know people are following the site, and may even be waiting for each race report.  I feel that pressure, and it is perfectly fine with me.  In fact, it helps me stay motivated and disciplined with it, and the training, racing, and everything else I do here.  So basically, thank you.  Thank you for reading, and following the site, and serving that function in my life and living experience.  Thank you.  It is additional motivation in all aspects of my life, I recognize that, and I thank you all for being a part of that experience.

I also think that it is popular or fashionable for people to ignore and even deny this impact in their lives.  I can’t help but feel that denial is bogus. What do you think?  Am I off the wheel here?  How many of you reading this now know what I’m talking about?  How many of you think I’m crazy?

I will soon post the Sursee Report.  You will have to navigate to find it. I am going to post a bunch of pictures over the next few posts, and there will be fewer words.  I hope you all tell me what you think. Take a look at this video [10secs]…  it sums up the smaller things that seem to pop up at me everyday…

Oh, and these guys (same day)… I have a video (with good sound)…  I’ll post it if I get comments that ask for it… (wink)Is that Bubbles?

Internet?

Posted on June 26, 2007

Hey all…

I’ve been without internet for a few days, but things are back on now.  I am leaving for Schindeleggi in five minutes, so this will be a really quick post.  Sursee went really well, and I have a report about 90% done that I might be able to post tonight.  For now, here are a few snaps.

Sursee

Posted on June 23, 2007

So, was the Zurich report worth the wait?  Please be sure to read it and let me know what you think.  I think the reports are serving a ‘timeline’ of sorts of my learning here, as well as a journal of my experience.

Anyway, I am off to Zurich, but I thought I would post the link to this silly video I was toying with after a light ride with the boys…

or click here and “save as…” (HQ)

Wish me luck in today’s race.  I’ll let you know how things go.

Busy/Tough/Productive

Posted on June 20, 2007

Today was a very busy day that was both tough and productive.

First, I rode to the track, then I taught a clinic this afternoon, then I did a brief workout with the swiss Juniors (since I was there), then I taught a private lesson, then skated a sprint workout on the track, then a 10km points race.  it was insanely hot tonight, and it seemed noone had enough fluids to drink.  Then I rode home form the track.  I’m tired.  On the way home I was riding at dusk with thunderstorms all around me in the distant horizon.  It was magnificent.  I came home the last 4km or so in a light mist.  The ground was just beginning to saturate, and had that sweet wet smell.  I have never enjoyed riding in the rain as much as I did tonight.  I came down the windey hill into Kreuzlingen carefully on the wet pavement, but man was it fun.

I am going to treat myself to something good to eat.  Tomorrow is a rest day.  Maybe I will play some cricket.

Crazy

Posted on June 20, 2007

What a day yesterday.  A truly great ride in the morning, a good skate in the evening, “inline cricket” at night, and a practical joke on poor Ruben that I will have to post video of soon.

I did start the Zurich Report, and it is coming along well, though slowly.  I hope that it will be worth your wait.  I hope to have it finished tonight.  I am teaching a clinic this afternoon, and there are sprints on the tack tonight, so today will be busy.  I am racing in Sursee on Saturday, so we are in prep here for that.

For now, i will post a few pictures from yesterda’y ride.  Oh!  The jerseys we are wearing…  We actually bought those the night before Zurich at 1:30am at an outdoor flea/street market.  That to itslef is a great story.  We were walking through it, and at the last booth/table we saw these ‘ugly’ addidas soccer shirts… only they had a zippered collar…  and pockets on the back… what the hell~!?! they’re cycling jerseys! Four of them!  In our sizes!  Wait, this one has a longer zipper… is it a full-zip?  No, its a full skinsuit!  :O with a suede Naoli shamois!  No way!  How much for all four of them?  WHAT!?!?  15CHF?

So we got three Jerseys and a skinsuit for around $15 total.  Jimbo claimed the skin because it he discovered it, and frankly, I think it would only fit him anyways.  Jimbo’s ‘cool’ interchangable lens cycling glasses were bought at the market too.  They are extra cool.

Here are a few pics from yesterday’s ride.

The Simplified Lesson: Volume 5

Posted on June 19, 2007

Stop worrying about what size your wheels are and how many grams your boot weighs. Fix your technique.

We had a big party last night.  The cops came and everything.  We had to pay a fine for the noise from the full-volume sing-along.  Anyway, I didn’t get to the Zurich report, or much else for that matter last night.  Though I did have a really great ride in the late afternoon.  Really great.  Finster and I rode into Germany, and rode into a few townships northwest of Konstanz, then made our way east, then back south back into Kreuzlingen.

At some point Danny almost got in a fight with an aggressively angry driver.  I can’t believe some people are stupid enough to attempt to use their vehicle as a weapon because there are people riding a bike on the street.  They must have other problems.

…Then, a phone call from Christoph later, we met up with him and rode [the three of us] for a little less than an hour.  We came by the house, Finster stopped to make a phone call, and Christoph and I continued on for about another 45mins.  It was one of the nicest rides here this season.  I was listening to some really good tunes that made the ride really enjoyable.

I will get to the report today, as I have some time in the middle of the day.  I hope to sit back for a bit, sip on some coffee, relax, and actually enjoy writing it, rather than rush and make it feel like ‘work’.

I’m also working on a bit of a profile/introduction page to my roommates here in Kreuzlingen.  I’ll take my time with that too.

I have a bit of a headache.

The Simplified Lesson: Volume 4

Posted on June 18, 2007

As far as wheels go, lighter is not necessarily better.

I raced Zurich yesterday, and though my placement wasn’t my highest, my performance certainly was. I even went on an attack! I think I could have done a little more in the sprint too, but dealing with the traffic in the last few hundred meters is well… insane. I think if you put a laymen into the middle of the field going into a 180° corner amongst the top names in skating, I’m pretty sure their head would immediately explode. I will write a real report after my ride today. It was a race… with tough competition.

The Simplified Lesson: Volume 3

Your feet are falling asleep because you are tying your skates too tight.

I added three somewhat brief reports; Incheon, Weinfelden, and Dijon.  You know where to find them.  Navigate.

I am off to race Zurich this afternoon. Wish me luck.
