Translated Version

I have a paper to hand in this afternoon, plus I have spinning, two squash games, and basketball tonight.  Haha, no skating though.  It will be a little shorter than an ordinary Monday.  Practices at ‘Scoot’s’ are cancelled this week for march break reasons…  I was wondering at practice yesterday though, if it would just be possible to skate a little later into the evening or something.  not much time left in the “off-season”.

2008 depart Party!!

Posted on March 8, 2008

The date is coming…

The biggest bash in tha sk8ng nay’shun.  It’s gonna be off tha hizz-nick!!!

Ok, that sounds dumb, but this party is going to be a blast.  I am trying to secure/confirm the best date for it.  I’m thinking March 29-30, but I’m still not sure.

Last year saw live imporov music, dancing, some impromptu games, including one strange one with a bottle and a lot of people falling, attendees from Ottawa and Montreal, visitors from German National ST team, doctors, lawyers, and we even rented a live cow!   It was awesome.  I expect this year to rival last year, and I even hear rumblings of people coming from Calgary to attend…

I should lock down a date soon, I’ll keep y’all posted.

Feel free to pass along suggestions…

On with other things:
I think it’s time to post a small picture of Sandra that I think is cute…

So, the snow keeps coming down.  I am absolutely tired of it.  Tomorrow’s practice is going on as scheduled, despite the wether being atrocious at this point.  Some of the practices scheduled for next week and the week after are cancelled for vaious reasons, and I think I am ready to g crazy under these training conditions.  I’m contemplating the idea of going somewhere warm for a few days before I get slammed with exams, and I have to leave for Europe.  I’ve got some posts on the backburner at the moment, but I wanted to get the word out about the party for now.  I’ll confirm dates, and hope all the shortees can make it.  We’ll see who makes the trek from O-bitz.  Hear that, Publow?  I’ve got to put up some training updates that I’ve already delayed.  Anyway, back to the books,

Memorable Quote #7:

Me (Aaron Arndt):
              “Leading’s a bitch.”

So, first thing is first, there’s a bunch of things on the go.  I’ve been insanely busy of late, and correspondingly tired.  I did an e-interview with Andrew Kraft of “Andrew’s Speed Skating Blog”.  I am looking forward to see what he does with it, and I will surely be linking to it soon.  I think it’s a little different than a normal skater interview, and discusses some things that I think I’ve always been interested in writing about but never really have.  I’m hoping it comes out well.

And, last night’s practice was awesome.
Whahaha! Ok, so it was definitely skewed towards the upper-elite guys, and that always has some consequences.  :P It was probably less of a balanced focus, and for more of the majority it became a very tough but really fun practice.    The warm-up was progressive, long and quite tough.  But, from start to finish, it was quality.  I figure it was about 150 laps.  To get quality out of something that long is rather remarkable.  I have to urge those that take a seat early to try their best to manage their efforts over the course of the workload.

I broke the relay down a little differently last night, and basically had the fast guys doing their thing, while a good portion of the group was ~relegated to skating in the ‘off-teams’.  But, they remained grouped together and I tried to add some mandatory passing to their mix.  There was a whole lot of repetition; lots of single lap relay bouts.  Unfortunately, I think that there was a fairly large speed discrepancy within each set for these guys.  And there may have been less dynamic movement amongst a group than they may have been used to.

For me, and the majority of last night’s attendees, it was the best practice of the season.  Haha, there was a real buzz in the fast guy clique afterwards.  It was truly electric.  For us, there was complete parity through the whole of both relays.  I never came out for an exchange in the same position two sets in a row. It would go from first to last, and  back to first etc. constantly.  Crazy passing, crazy speed, and the group finished both of the relays in (three guys per): 10×1, then a [4×1,3×2,1×4,3×2,4×1] together, they both even came down to a pretty decent lunge. Missy Maas got the first one, Travis Shaw the second.

It was truly awesome.  I love when the guys come off the floor and the things that they are excited about are really dynamic skills; this or that pass, the excitement, a fall, an outside run, a set of exchanges, a slip, a save…

Anyway, I have pages to read…

Oh, and I wanted to post this little explanation aid that I drew up on Sunday’s practice.  It is basically exlplaining the relationship of direction of push, and leverage, and it’s impact on “power” over the course of push.  ie: F=force, and t=time.

In the works…

Posted on March 4, 2008

So, there’s a whole whack of stuff in the pipeline, so stay tuned…

But for now, Monday night’s practice was so good, a few things that stood out had to be mentioned; like Travis Shaw riding Jacky Shu like a work mule in order to avoid a crash, RSC President Wayne Burrett throwing down some awe inspiring passes into a crowd, Candy Wong above and beyond full speed while mixing it up in the group despite being thrown about the track repeatedly by the infamous relay exchanges of teammate Leo Frusteri.  Big ups to all attendees to last night’s fun, but slightly chaotic practice.

Stay tuned for some ~major news on aaronarndt.ca in the coming days.
